Rosetta High School Student Recognised For Sustainable Tasmania Vision

Brett Byers' year ten classmates recently helped celebrate his success in a CleanBiz sustainability contest.

The contest was run during last year's Tasmanian Youth Environment Conference.

CleanBiz Officer, Damien Blackwell, presented Brett with his book award during a year ten assembly at Rosetta High School last month.

"As part of the 2008 Youth Environment Conference, we created a set of four sustainability-themed postcards to raise students' awareness about the environment and sustainability in a light-hearted way" said Damien.

"The reverse side of each postcard had a 'two minute' carbon quiz for students to try, with the answers-plus a chance to win a sustainability-themed prize-available via the CleanBiz website".

"At the website, students were then invited to give us their vision for a more sustainable Tasmania in 25 words or less".

Brett submitted one of two winning entries in the CleanBiz sustainability contest and for his efforts, he received around 'Earth' - a collection of stunning photos and essays about many of earth's high-profile and lesser-known natural and man-made features.

"It's great that my entry was considered worthwhile. Thanks to CleanBiz for the book, though I'm not sure I can get it home on my bike" said Brett.

As an additional prize, year ten coordinator, Mr Adam Direen, accepted three copies of True Green Kids from Mr Blackwell for Rosetta High's library collection.

The inaugural two day 2008 Tasmanian Youth Environment Conference brought together students from schools around the state to debate environmental issues with local experts, formulate and present possible solutions to environmental problems and engage in hands-on activities such as identifying flora and fauna, building nesting boxes and generating renewable power.
