Noise Regulations

Restrictions on neighbourhood noise are prescribed in the Environmental Management and Pollution Control (Miscellaneous Noise) Regulations 2004.

Draft amendments to the Environmental Management and Pollution Control (Miscellaneous Noise) Regulations 2004 have been prepared for public consultation.

It is proposed to update and improve existing regulations covering chainsaw usage, noise measurement, hours of use of certain items, and operation of certain items on residential premises. New regulations are also proposed to cover operation of vehicle security alarms and intruder alarm systems.

The existing Regulations contain provisions on ‘neighbourhood’ noise sources such as off-road vehicles, lawn mowers, power tools and heat pumps. In general the Regulations are implemented by local government and Tasmania Police.

Other relevant legislation includes:

  • Dog Control Act 2000 and Regulations
  • Local Government Act 1993 and Regulations
  • Vehicle and Traffic (Vehicle Standards) Regulations 2001
  • Commonwealth legislation controlling noise from aircraft and licensed aerodromes.
