Regional Programs
King Island Sustainable Futures
CleanBiz seeks to collaborate with local councils, public utilities and commercial operators to help deliver resource efficiency benefits to the Tasmanian business community.
Our first regional collaboration, King Island Sustainable Futures, concluded with an Awards Evening on 6 November 2008. This program involved over 30 King Island enterprises including the Council and local district high school. By modifying their behaviour and changing or updating appliances and other devices, this group of commercial (and non commercial) operators was able to deliver:
- Cost savings of more than $10,000 (~ $400 per enterprise per annum)
- Energy savings of about 47MWhr (sufficient to power ~5 Tasmanian homes for a year)
- A decrease in greenhouse gas emissions of more than 20 tonnes per annum
- A decrease in waste to landfill of more than 20 tonnes per annum
King Island Sustainable Future’s participants will continue to implement recommendations contained in their sustainability assessment reports during 2009, building on their sustainability performance and encouraging other enterprises to support a more sustainable approach to island business.
