2002 Winners
On 1 June 2002, Mr David Llewellyn, the then Minister for Primary Industries, Water and Environment, announced the winners of the Tasmanian Awards for Environmental Excellence at the Annual Environment Ministers Dinner held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Hobart.
Pasminco Hobart Smelter won the 2002 major award. A significant contaminated groundwater issue had been developing over more than 85 years of smelting activity at Pasminco. The company started a management and effluent recovery treatment program in the late 1990s, which included a number of interception and recovery systems, such as a horizontal well drilled below site buildings and plant. Since the system went into full swing at the end of last year, the groundwater recovery systems have intercepted and treated more than 22,000 m3 of groundwater and recovered an estimated 148 tonne of zinc, equivalent to three tonne per week of zinc discharges to the river.
