About Us
The Environment Division aims to ensure best practice in environmental management so Tasmania can have a clean, healthy and sustainable environment that supports the community’s economic and social well-being.
Major functions of the Division include the development of a high quality and contemporary policy and legislative framework for sustainable environmental management. It promotes and facilitates the adoption of clean and sustainable practices across industry and the community and ensures development proposals meet appropriate environmental guidelines and standards.
The Division supports the Environment Protection Authority in monitoring and regulating environmental performance and providing the community with information about the quality of the environment by reporting on key performance indicators. It also provides a range of reliable, high quality scientific analytical services to government agencies, businesses and the community, including analyses of algae and chemical analyses of food products and drinking, surface, ground and waste waters.
Further key functions of the Division are to foster better integration and strategic direction in coastal planning and management across Tasmania, and to facilitate the remediation of historical environmental damage.
