Coastal Management

Tasmania has nearly 5,000 kilometres of coastline with approximately 90 percent of the population living, working and playing on or near the coast. The coastal environment is complex and comprises beaches, dunes, cliffs, wetlands, marine areas and the ecosystems they contain. There is no single management authority for the coast, instead this diverse area is managed by a range of state and local government agencies. General guidance and an overall framework for the management of the coast are provided by the State Coastal Policy 1996. This policy is administered by the Coastal and Marine Branch within DTAE.
