Regional Coastal Management Strategies

Map showing locations of Tasmanian coastal and marine strategies.
In Tasmania, six regional coastal management strategies have been developed with the assistance of Natural Heritage Trust funding.
Together these projects cover most of Tasmania’s coastline and have significant support from Local Government together with State Government, industry and community groups.
The following strategies are available:
The Derwent Estuary Program focuses on restoring and protecting the coastal foreshore and estuarine resources of the Derwent River. The Program was formalised via a Partnership Agreement between the Tasmanian State Government and six Local Councils that border on the estuary: Hobart City Council, Glenorchy City Council, Kingborough Council, Clarence City Council, Brighton Council and Derwent Valley Council. For more information see the Derwent Estuary Program website: www.derwentriver.tas.gov.au ![]()
The Integrated South East Coastal Management Strategy focuses on coastal issues for the coastline of Sorell, Clarence and Tasman Municipalities. The Strategy covers a range of issues including coastal vegetation, geomorphology, public access and visual amenity. Note that other supporting documents to the Strategy have been developed on weeds, geomorphology and nature conservation values. For more information see the following attachments:

- Geomorphology of the South Eastern Region of Tasmania
- The Nature Conservation Values of the South East Coast of Tasmania.
The Action Plan for Marine and Coastal Management in North East Tasmania (Coastlink) focuses on integrated regional coastal and marine management. It covers the municipal areas of Dorset, Break O'Day and Glamorgan-Spring Bay Councils. The Plan sets out tasks to implement an integrated strategy, and covers topics such as regional coordination, planning for coastal management, managing the coast, awareness, knowledge and skills, and information and monitoring. For more information, see the Coastlink Action Plan.
The Tamar Estuary and Foreshore Management Plan (the TEFMP) has been prepared as the major component of the Tamar Estuary 2020 project. The TEFMP deals with a range of planning management issues with a specific focus on the foreshore along the Tamar Estuary and the adjoining northern Coastline.
Local Coastal Management Plans
Many site specific management plans were developed under Coastcare by the land manager (Local Council or Parks and Wildlife Service) and the community. Some of these plans are available below:
