Whose Beach Is It?

This brochure provides information on shorebirds such as Fairy Terns, Little Terns, Hooded Plovers and Pied Oystercatchers, which breed and live on sandy beaches.

It discusses the human activities that disturb the birds, who are then less likely to nest, and their chicks and eggs are more likely to be damaged or eaten. Increased use of beaches by people is resulting in the decline in the number of shorebirds around Tasmania.

This brochure provides information on what you can do to reduce your impact on the shorebirds. Tips include staying at least 50 metres away from birds during their breeding season between September and March and keeping your dog on a leash at this time of year.

Contact details of groups that can help you identify birds and determine the location of dog friendly beaches are also provided.
