Proposed State Coastal Policy 2006
The public comment period on the proposed State Coastal Policy 2006 and associated documents has now closed.
The State Coastal Policy 1996 and all other State Policies are required to be reviewed periodically under the State Policies and Projects Act 1993
to ensure they remain relevant and are up-to-date.
In early 2005 the Government reviewed the State Coastal Policy 1996 with the aim of ensuring there is an effective framework in place for the management and sustainable development of our coast.
A package of documents has now been produced, which is based on the views of stake-holder groups and the general public, obtained during the first round of consultation conducted late in 2004.
The State Coastal Policy package of documents comprises:
- Introduction
- State Coastal Policy 2006
- Guidelines to assist planning authorities implement the State Coastal Policy 2006 through planning schemes
- Model Standards for use and development to assist in implementing the State Coastal Policy 2006.
A feature of the package is the focus on assisting planning authorities to implement the State Coastal Policy through their planning schemes. A review of implementation of the Coastal Policy conducted in 2000 found that insufficient guidance and assistance to planning authorities was a problem. The Guidelines and Model Standards documents have been prepared to overcome this shortcoming.
There were other documents produced in the course of the Review that may be of interest to members of the public, as follows:
- Discussion Paper – the report produced at the start of the first round of stakeholder and public consultation to inform that process
- Response Paper – a report on the main issues to emerge from the first round of stakeholder and public consultation
- Reconciliation of the Existing Policy to the Proposed New Policy – a report which evaluates the clauses of the 1996 Policy and indicates the proposed response for the new Policy.
The public comment period on the proposed State Coastal Policy 2006 has now closed. We thank those who were involved in the public workshops that were run and/or made submissions. Your comments are appreciated and will be considered in the further development of the Policy.
A report will soon be prepared which addresses the issues raised in feedback. This report will be considered by the project Steering Committee in its preparation of a final version of the policy. The final version will be forwarded to the Premier for referral to the Resource Planning and Development Commission, as part of the formal approval process.
Updates on progress of the State Coastal Policy will be posted on this website.
