Coastal Values of Southern and Northern Tasmania NRM Projects
The Coastal and Marine Branch managed two NRM projects that have produced easily accessible data sets on vegetation/fauna habitat and geomorphology to support better strategic planning, land use planning and management on the coast.
The projects looked at a 100m wide coastal strip of the Northern and Southern Tasmania NRM Regions, collected and then assessed a range of vegetation, fauna habitat and geomorphic values data.
The available data sets are:
- The Tasmanian Quaternary Coastal Sediments Polygon Map. This map describes sediment types, landform types and dune mobility of coastal landforms.
- Coastal Values Vegetation Map
- Coastal Values Vegetation Significance Map
- Coastal Values Native Vegetation Condition Map
- Coastal Values Native Vegetation Viability Map
- Coastal Values Fauna Significance Map
- Coastal Values Observed Fauna Habitat Map
- Coastal Values Potential Fauna Habitat Map
- An update of 1,800 kilometres of the Tasmanian Shoreline Geomorphic Types Line Map, which describes landform types in a simple, yet detailed descriptive format.
The vegetation and fauna habitat data sets are already available on the LIST. You can access them at www.thelist.tas.gov.au
. Follow the links to the 'Coastal Values' layer in the layer management function of LISTMaps. The geomorphic data is in the process of being uploaded and will be available soon.
Experienced GIS Software users can also download the data sets or obtain them on CD from the Coastal and Marine Branch to upload onto their own computers.
Complimentary resources such as Interpretation Manuals and photographs are also available to be downloaded.
In the future, this coastal values mapping methodology will be applied to other parts of Tasmania to provide access to this coastal planning and management tool for the whole State
