About Us

The Environment Division has the responsibility for overseeing the management, protection and enhancement of the Tasmanian environment, which is achieved through a broad range of environmental services provided to Local and State government, industry and the community.

The Division's many roles include ensuring development proposals meet appropriate environmental guidelines; providing environmental and planning policy advice; and measuring and reporting on indicators of environmental performance.  In addition, the Division has the leading role in the development of State Environment Protection Policies and regulations for environmental management.

The Division works closely with its stakeholders to ensure that the demands for modern environmental standards are met by the adoption of best international practices and with sustainable development as a core principle.

The Division is responsible for administering the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994.  This Act established the Board of Environmental Management and Pollution Control, which has broad ranging powers in relation to environmental management issues.

The Division has an establishment of approximately 100 officers within five Branches.
